Research
My
scientific interests deal with evolutionary biology and ecology, as well as conservation genetics of
marine and brackish-water species. In particular, I am interested in the study
of within- and between-population genetic variability and microevolutionary
processes, such as gene flow and genetic drift. Analysis of biodiversity at
genetic level, with special regard to cryptic diversity (high degree of
between-population genetic divergence and, ultimately, sibling species
complexes). Target species are of relevance to conservation (threatened species
and introduced exotic species) and commercial interest (exploited species).
Based on taxa studied, my research activity can be subdivided in the

Genetics Lab
Most
of FM's lab activities are carried out in the lab of the Dipartimento di
Zoologia e Genetica Evoluzionistica of the
University of
Sassari in
Sassari (Sardinia), where
FM has been working. The analyses carried out in our
lab in Sassari focused on the use of molecular markers to quantify
within-population and among-population genetic diversity. We use markers such as
allozymes, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPDs), inter simple sequence
repeats (ISSRs) and microsatellites (SSRs). A number of undergraduate students are
involved in the lab actvities under the supervision of Marco Casu and Piero
Cossu. Genetic data are then statistically processed
in Pisa.
